Pueden crecer hasta los 2,4 a 3,0 m de altura y produce coloridas flores en forma de embudo. Se cultivan como plantas ornamentales y sus hojas se usan en la cocina y la medicina tradicional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Caracter\u00edsticas:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Son hierbas que alcanzan un tama\u00f1o de 3 m de alto. Hojas angostamente el\u00edpticas, de hasta 70 cm de largo y 10 cm de ancho, \u00e1pice acuminado, base cuneada, glabras a densa y menudamente pub\u00e9rulas; l\u00edgula hasta 12 mm de largo. Inflorescencia un racimo o tirso p\u00e9ndulo, hasta 40 cm de largo y 10 cm de ancho, cincinos con 1 (\u20133) flores, br\u00e1cteas ausentes, bract\u00e9olas ampliamente el\u00edpticas, 20\u201330 mm de largo, densamente ferrug\u00edneo-hirsutas, blancas con \u00e1pice rojo, pedicelos hasta 3 mm de largo; c\u00e1liz 15\u201320 mm de largo; corola 40\u201350 mm de largo, casi glabra, blanca con \u00e1pice rojo; labelo 40\u201360 mm de largo, amarillo rayado con rojo, estaminodios laterales diminutos. C\u00e1psula globosa, ca 20 mm de di\u00e1metro; semillas no vistas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cultivo:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alpinia zerumbet se cultiva mejor en un medio rico en humedad, que humedezca los suelos bien drenados a pleno sol a sombra parcial. Se recomienda sombra en la tarde en climas calurosos de verano. Interior, la planta deber\u00e1 contar con luz brillante y condiciones de humedad. La floraci\u00f3n ocurre raramente antes del segundo a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Usos:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las largas l\u00e1minas de las hojas de la planta todav\u00eda se utilizan para envolver Zongzi. En Okinawa, Jap\u00f3n, A. zerumbet se conoce en el dialecto local como sannin, o en japon\u00e9s como getto. Sus hojas se venden como t\u00e9 de hierbas y tambi\u00e9n se utilizan para los fideos y envolver los pasteles mochi de arroz. Su t\u00e9 tiene propiedades hipotensoras, diur\u00e9ticas y anti-ulcerosas.
